I am an Archaeologist based in New Orleans who is interested in any information from Creoles from New Orleans with Native American Ancestry. In the last couple of years we have been finding a good number of Native American ceramics mixed in with European style ceramics as well as Colono ware at archaeological sites in various areas of the city. What I am looking for specifically are people who know who their Native American ancestors are and have been handed down family stories about them. I am also very interested if anyone knows if their family have or had any heir loomed Native American ceramics that they kept from these Native American ancestors. Although I was born and raised in New Orleans, growing up, I never heard any stories from my family about Native Americans in New Orleans. To quote Jerah Johnson's article on Colonial New Orleans in the book "Creole New Orleans: Race and Americanization", the reason for the absence of Native Americans in the later historical record of the city is because the "Indians disappeared from sight in New Orleans not because they died out or moved away, but because,in the words of an 1880's observer, they 'melted away into mulattoes'" (Johnson p. 40). I am writing a paper for publication and/or for a conference presentation and would acknowledge any assistance I receive. Please post any information you have or if you prefer, please email it to me. My e-mail address is: AngeleMontana@msn.com. Thank you.
